Poecilotheria fasciata Bite (Sri Lanken Ornamental Tarantula

Postby ImTheDaddy on Wed May 06, 2009 5:13 pm

Hello all,

On the 28th April I was feeding my sub adult 4.5" Poecilotheria fasciata a silk worm using a short pair of hemostats. When putting the silky in i made the mistake of placing my finger between the tarantula and its meal. She automaticly spun round and sank her fangs into my middle finger  . The bite itself at first was not to painful, i put the lid back on the cage and went straight to the bathroom and washed the bite area. I went into the living room and sat down by now my adrenaline was pumping round my body.
After about 10 mins the bite area began to throb and started to swell slightly, and i started to feel shooting pains up my left arm, the pain went from bite to my elbow. An hour went by and i started to feel nauseated and a bit fevrish and had the chills. (symptoms where similiar to that of travel sickness). The next day i was still suffering from nausea, vomiting (twice i vomited  )I had a constant headache and most of the muscles on the left side of my body ached. After 24 hours of being bitten the the vomiting stopped and i began to feel better in myself.(no nausea headache cleared). Later that eveing i started to suffer severe muscle cramps mainly in my arm and calf muscles, the swelling on the bite area had gone down. Its been over a week now and i feel well in myself apart from the occasional muscle cramps in the middle of the night. I have put the cramps down to my bite as i have never had so many muscle cramps in such a short space of time :o . I am still having the occaional muscle cramps now and again and can expect these for quite some time.

After being bitten i took a course of antihistermines and ibuprophen to help ease the pain and symptoms. I also drank plenty of water to flush my system and avoided alcohol for 7 days.
What we have to remember is certain tarantulas have more poten venomthan others. New world species ie: G Rosea (chilean Rose) B Smithi (mexican Red Knee) have uricating hairs that they use as a first line of defence, and will kick these hairs of if they feel threatend. Old world species ie: Poecilotheria fasciata Bite (Sri Lanken Ornamental) or H Lividum (cobalt Blue) have more potent venom and are NOT able to kick off uricating hairs so i would always advise starting with a new world species and work your way towards old world speices. We must also recoginse that these animals are display pets and i have a "no handling policy" to protect my tarantula and also to protect me. If you do get bitten by any member of the Poecilotheria genus i would advise medical attention as soon as possible

Hope this helps anyone who reads it and if you have anyu questions please feel free to ask.

ITD ;)
